Tips For Making Gaming Related Content

So after 5 years of writing on this site I can safely say that I am a somewhat experienced content creator (albeit a shitty one) so I feel that I am able to give a few tips to people who want to get into this hobby and want to enjoy it. First of all, I’m not here to tell you how to be a better writer or how to improve your content because I’m gonna be honest with you, you can be the best writer in the world but that doesn’t mean that people are gonna give a shit. What matters the most is that you get content out there as soon as you can because the reality is that you’re not going to live forever and have very little time to get things done, so go and do it already, I guess that covers my first piece of advice, be assertive, not a perfectionist. Don’t read up on how to do it well, just do it right fucking now.

The next piece of advice is dealing with the criticism and understanding the root of criticism. People who criticize your work are either pissed off about something you said or are envious of your ability to produce content which they clearly aren’t able to do and if they are, they probably have a stick up their ass and think that they are better than you which is 100% false because content is subjective. I have had many people criticize the quality of my content simply because I had the nerve to talk shit about their favorite game. Those people have been blocked from this site and my Youtube channel so you won’t see them. Why you ask? Because when people see people leaving criticism in a patronizing tone, it makes my site look bad and damages my reputation. Now I’m not trying to hide the fact that I’m trash at making content because I think by now I’ve made it pretty damn clear that I’m not a professional and for good reason, I am not getting paid. So if you see these people show up in comments of any of your content, block them immediately because they will only serve to deter other people away from your content who may have otherwise consumed it.

Another piece of advice and this is mainly for video reviews. If you want to be taken seriously then never ever do a live review! Many people seem to think that it’s ok to do a review and play the game at the same time. I see this everywhere all over Youtube. Now I’m not going to tell people not to make live reviews because it’s kind of like watching people fail at takeshi’s castle, it’s hilarious how people seem to think that they can do it and they always fail, no matter who they are. Pre-record the footage first, ideally with a script if you can, then record video footage of you playing the game after the fact or vice versa. Never do both at the same time unless you want to look incoherent and stupid. Why are live reviews a bad idea you ask? Well that’s simple, you become distracted by the game so whatever point you were trying to make de-rails into commentary on your own gameplay in the game you’re trying to review, which means that you never get your point across. If you’ve done one of these hilarious reviews before, don’t feel bad, you entertained us all. You’ll look back on it one day and laugh but it is still a stepping stone towards establishing your legacy that you’ll never forget. I know because I’ve made silly mistakes like this in the past, granted I never did a live review, mainly because I did only written reviews back then.

Next piece of advice is content dumping. You see places like Reddit? Those places exist for a reason, to allow content creators to market their stuff. I really hope you’re not scared of reddit moderators because you’re going to piss a lot of people off with this but don’t feel bad, it’s not like you’re actually being harmful to the subreddit, you’re actually doing that subreddit a favor by giving people some actual value as opposed to the drivel that you usually see on there. If they don’t like it then fuck them. If it gets deleted, put it up again, if it gets deleted again, put it up again until you get banned. Don’t worry, you won’t ever need to go to that subreddit ever again because you’ll be too busy making content. Anyways, the purpose of reddit dumping is not just to get free views, it’s to gauge interest. You want to find out whether or not your content is gripping enough to attract the crowd you are looking for and this is how you do it. Be merciless, break the rules, be a fucking rebel! Reddit deserves it anyways since it’s a cesspool but not everyone on it is bad and some may actually value your content, though it’s very rare to find someone loyal on reddit, if you do find someone willing to engage in your content, give them the respect they deserve by responding or at the very least liking their comments to show that you have read them, this goes for everyone who has the decency to comment on your stuff.

Next up I want to talk about recording and screencapping, this is without a doubt the most arduous process in any piece of content I do. Why is this? Because I have to record 2 hours worth of footage for 10 seconds worth of video, either that or 2 hours of footage for 1 screenshot. It fills my HDD up like no tomorrow and is annoying as hell but that’s what I do. I then edit it to varying results. If you look at my content, you’ll probably see a lot of different approaches to editing, there’s the “give a damn” and the “I don’t give a damn” approach. The “give a damn” approach is when the footage is cut into small 2-20 second long chunks of footage taken from 2 hour long raw footage that cuts into another 2-20 second long chunk of footage from another 2+ hour long raw footage video. I repeat the process for an eternity till I get it right, I then compress it in Standard Definition because I hate my life and then I upload it like an idiot, please don’t make the same mistake I do and go High Definition if you can but if Standard Definition is the best you can do with your editing software like me then just do it. As for screencapping, well that can be a bloody nightmare in 3d beat em ups when you want a screencap of the combat system and you have to mash the spacebar button on the recording to pause and unpause so you can essentially turn your video into a slideshow to get the least blurry frame possible to use as an image, print screen, crop it, save it, rinse and repeat. Doesn’t that sound like so much fun? Well if not then you can just do it the easy way by not putting any images on your work so that people complain about the great wall of china that you apparently force them to read against their will, that my friends is the “don’t give a damn approach” which is basically this article in a nutshell. Another “don’t give a damn” approach is to release a long ramble over some old footage you recorded that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic but gives people something to look at. I love this method as it takes zero effort and yet it gets the same results I would have gotten if I did the “give a damn” method. Point is, make life easier for yourself people, don’t feel the need to beat yourself up over content creation like I do because you will get burnt out very quickly and that isn’t good. Don’t worry about me though, I still have plenty of juice left to keep me going, just don’t be surprise if I pick the “don’t give a damn” approach every so often.

Next up we have a very important piece of advice and that is to take interest in other people’s content, particularly those who are on the same level as you or beneath your level. Why the fuck should I watch your content if you can’t be bothered to watch anyone elses? If you think other people’s content is worthless and isn’t worth watching, chances are that people think the same about your content too, so support your community, give them support and do your bit. The world doesn’t revolve around you so don’t think you are above other people because you’re not, you’re a human being, therefore you are flawed like the rest of us. Watching other people’s content can give you inspiration and ideas, you can also make friends, who doesn’t like making friends?

Another piece of advice I have is in regards to burning out and ways to prevent it. The biggest piece of advice I can give is to try something different, maybe something that would take less work. I know the feeling of going from one review to the next and thinking “Here we go again, another review to do”. The moment you start thinking that is the moment that you need to try something else. Sometimes you just aren’t ready to review something and that is fine. In the meantime, work on something else, something different. Don’t worry if it doesn’t turn out well, it’s your first try after all. Give it a shot, see how people respond and if it doesn’t get any response, don’t feel bad, just do something different next time. Who knows, you might find yourself wanting to make reviews again at some point. I think fluctuating between different types of content is healthy, I know that many bigger channels have people who demand a certain type of content and I get that, if you are a big content creator then it may be best to focus on what it is you do but if you’re just starting out or are doing it as a hobby then there’s nothing to lose.

Finally the last piece of advice is to play videogames, lots and lots of videogames. As a gaming content creator, you need a lot of knowledge about videogames and the best way to get that knowledge is to play them. It’s not the only source of knowledge out there though, there are books and other content creators out there that can help you out. Always find a way to educate yourself on games if you can and do it in a way that is fun for yourself. If you don’t find playing videogames to be fun then you’re clearly doing the wrong thing. Keep playing videogames, they are your source of inspiration and knowledge but don’t just let all those mechanics and gameplay elements go over your head, analyze the games you play, figure out any issues the game has and if you can, try to find the source, this alone can be fulfilling in itself to do and can make for a more interesting piece of content later down the line.

So those are my biggest tips, just don’t think you’re going to get billions of followers and lots of money with this advice because I’m not here to encourage you to make clickbait or be a yes man, I encourage you to be yourself and take pride in what you do but to be self-aware enough to recognize your flaws and capabilities so that you remain modest, because modesty is a virtue I believe all people need to live by. Nothing good comes from being a narcissist or an egotist and those people fall the furthest. That being said however, never be afraid to speak your mind and bruise people, you’ll make them all angry but in the end, you got their attention anyways so it’s not a complete loss.

5 years Of Cynical Gaming Blog

So it’s been 5 years since this blog started, hard to believe that it’s been that long. Thanks to everyone who has consumed my content over the past 5 years. I have some ideas for the future so watch the video if you want to find out what I plan on doing.

Those of you who are new to the blog, please note that the lockdown period has given me a lot of free time to make content so expect it to be a lot slower after the lockdown period is over.
